Really Big Catfish
This Mekong catfish of Thailand weighs in at 646 pounds.
Here is the story I was able to find:
Washington: Fishermen in northern Thailand have caught the biggest catfish on record – a 293-kilogram giant the size of a grizzly bear – and eaten it.
The giant catfish, believed to be the largest freshwater fish ever found, was caught in the Mekong River, home to more species of massive fish than any other river, on May 1, the World Wildlife Fund and the National Geographic Society reported.
“We’ve now confirmed that this catfish is the current record holder, an astonishing find,” Zeb Hogan, a WWF Conservation Science Fellow, said on Wednesday.
Local environmentalists and government officials tried to negotiate the release of the fish so it could continue its spawning migration in the far north of Thailand but the adult male died and was eaten in a remote village, the joint statement from both groups said.
The Mekong giant catfish is South-East Asia’s largest and rarest fish and the focus of a WWF-National Geographic project headed by Dr Hogan to study freshwater fish greater than two metres or 100 kilograms.
Dr Hogan, who expects to find even bigger fish, said the Mekong is a good habitat for such large creatures because it is one of the world’s deepest rivers, reaching depths of more than 60 metres.
Here was another photo. I’m not sure if this is the same fish.
