Iridescent Color of the mighty Sailfish

Posted in Fish, Friends and Family, Saltwater on September 29, 2009 by thegreatwhitehunter

I have always wondered why sailfish mounts are painted with bright colors when all of the pictures of sailfish are much more drab.  When my brother-in-law caught this beauty, suddenly it made more sense.  Check out the sail on this fish.

Bryan Hale-Amazing Sail

We first saw this sailfish because it’s sail was sticking out of the water like a shark from jaws.  This showoff tail danced all the way into the boat.  Congrats on a beautiful fish Bryan.

Alligator Gar-North America’s Freshwater Secret

Posted in Fish, Freshwater on September 27, 2009 by thegreatwhitehunter

Check out this tremendous Alligator Gar which was caught by Stephen Buss.  With the head of a gator and the body of a torpedo, these bad boys will eat anything, including water birds.  It is not unusual for these amazing creatures to reach weights of over 200 pounds.

Color Phase Utah Blackie

Posted in Bear, Big Game, North America on September 26, 2009 by thegreatwhitehunter

Brandon,  thanks for the amazing photos you took from your truck.  Utah doesn’t have a large black bear population, but it does have the distinction as producing the current Boone & Crockett Club world record for a black bear.  The world record bear, which ironically died of natural causes, had a skull measurement of 23 and 10/16 inches (1975) .  Here is a link to the record book black bear story.  http://www.boone-crockett.org/bgRecords/WorldRecordsDetail.asp?area=bgRecords&type=SKULLS Amazing chocolate Brandon!

Mountain Lion Attack-Scarry Stuff

Posted in Big Game, Cougar, North America on September 26, 2009 by thegreatwhitehunter

Mountain Lion stealth and power-bad combination for prey.  Seriously gripping photo montage.  Nature at its most raw.  NOT FOR KIDS or the weak of heart.

If anyone has additional info on these mountain lion attack photos give me a heads up.   Thanks to Wade for the forward.

Coyote-Wrong Place-Wrong Time

Posted in Big Game, Fish, North America on September 25, 2009 by thegreatwhitehunter

My son was the one who first saw her.  She had killed a yearling doe and had dragged it into a field.  A friend took care of the rest.   I have since learned that there is actually a bounty on these accomplished hunters to help maintain some balance with the mule deer numbers.  Predators and Ungulates a plenty out west-as evidenced by the recent delisting of the wolf in Idaho and Montana.

Spencer is one of my great buddies.  He was with me when I shot my Booner Alaska Black Bear.  I was with him on his first big game harvest.  His story of this amazing cougar is one for the ages.  Looks like it might have eaten a few of the hounds on its way up the tree.

Artic Red River Outfitters continues to have one amazing chunk of wildlife heaven in Northern Canada. Check out these amazing mountain caribou.  Thanks to Don Peay of the wildlife conservation powerhouse SFW for the photo.    I love Don’s plug “look at the photo and guess which bull is 466, which one is 430, 405 and 380.”

Hunts for Heros comes through again.  Two of these hunters were servicemen whose hunts were paid for by SFW donors.  Another of these lucky hunters got his hunt from a drawing at an SFW banquet.  SFW Keep up the awesome conservation effort.  Thanks again, Don for the photo.
