World Record Hammerhead-Big Fish, Little Boat

Posted in Fish, Saltwater, Trophies, World's Best on March 5, 2010 by thegreatwhitehunter

This 14.5 foot, 1262 pound hammerhead dwarfs the fishing boat.  After 5 hours of battle, this monster had towed fisherman Bucky Dennis and his boat 12 miles from its original location in Boca Grande pass in Florida.

This is a smaller 1,000 pound hammerhead caught by Bucky later in the same season.

These harvests have generated plenty of their own controversy.   To Bucky’s credit he donated the shark to scientific research.  Hammerheads are plentiful in Boca Grande and not really targeted by fisherman.  Both sharks were pregnant females.  Hammerheads in Boca Grande don’t appear to have put much of a dent in Tarpon populations.  Finally, there is some concerns about the resiliency of shark populations like hammerheads which give live birth.  Here is one opinion piece from Field and Stream http://www.fieldandstream.com/blogs/fishing/2009/05/cermele-dropping-hammer-again  Either way you cut it, this is one enormous hammerhead shark and a display of stamina for a fisherman who reeled in the monster over 5 hours.

Ethiopian Mountain Nyala-#2 alltime SCI

Posted in Africa, Big Game, International, International Hunting Adventures, Plainsgame, Trophies, World's Best on February 26, 2010 by thegreatwhitehunter

Yesterday’s post was on my harvest of a greater kudu in 2009.  Greater Kudu are one of the most popular and common of spiral horned antelope species in Africa.  This makes them affordable for the average Joe.  A not so common spiral horned antelope is the beautiful mountain Nyala.  One of my clients and already legendary hunter, Marc Watts harvested another amazing Spiral Horned antelope species-the mountain nyala.  Marc’s mountain nyala was harvested in Ethopia in November 2008 and scored a remarkable the 102 5/8 SCI, with 42 inch horns and 10 1/2 inch bases placing this exceptional animal at #2 on the alltime record book list.

Not only is this rare mountain nyala a trophy for the ages, the story of Marc hunting in African “mountain goat” country for this rare trophy makes the harvest a truly great story. Read the full story on the SCI website http://www.scifirstforhunters.org/article/index.cfm?action=view&ArticleID=3202

What makes Marc’s harvest that much more remarkable is that this is the second top 5 African spiral horned antelope harvested by Marc.   Here is a photo of Marc’s top 5 Lord Derby Eland.

To read more about Marc’s harvest of this exceptional animal visit my earlier post https://thegreatwhitehunter.wordpress.com/2009/09/26/lord-derby-eland-5-alltime-sci/

Marc has an exceptional line of award winning African Safari videos which can be purchased at Marc’s website at http://www.sabletrailproductions.com/  These two exceptional animals are just two of more than 275 animals Marc has harvested on the continent of Africa.  Marc was the first African American to complete the big five.  Read more about Marc at http://www.marcwatts.com/

Record Argentine Stag

Posted in Big Game, International, South America, Trophies, World's Best with tags on February 13, 2010 by thegreatwhitehunter

My wife is a patient woman.  She often points out that when it comes to traveling, if hunting or fishing is not involved, we don’t go.  Its not that every couple vacation is just a hunting or fishing trip.   For example, in 2007 we went to Costa Rica instead of Hawaii.  The trip involved plenty of beaches, surfing, zip lines, restaurants…you get the idea.  But at the end of the day, Costa Rica has much better Sailfish size and success than Hawaii.  Well when it comes to South America, there is no question that we will be visiting Argentina.  Here is the reason.

Thanks to Cory Glauner from Got Hunts for forward the photo of the #1 record Argentine Stag which was harvested on one of their hunting concessions.

In our house, Red Stag hold a certain mystique.  Ever since I have been researching antlered big game outside of mule deer and elk, the Red Stag has been right at the top of the list.  What a tremendous specimen.  Visit Got Hunts website for more amazing hunting photos and hunting adventures http://www.gothunts.com/

Steven Tisdale defeats Zorro

Posted in Big Game, North America, Pronhorn, Trophies with tags on February 11, 2010 by thegreatwhitehunter

I am totally amped up about an August 2010 pronghorn hunt with my 13 year-old Nate.  In that vein, today’s trophy post is of none other than the legendary Zorro.  Thanks to Steven Tisdale for use of the amazing photo of one amazing pronghorn.

Harvested in 2009, this proghorn boasts 17 inch long horns.  Steven had noticed this large buck months earlier, but was unable to connect.  The following year, he was finally able to close the deal after a first blown stalk.  Read the entire story in field and stream (its worth a read) http://www.fieldandstream.com/photos/gallery/hunting/2009/08/photos-huge-new-mexico-antelope-tagged-during-2009-bow-season

New World Record Bull Elk?

Posted in Big Game, Elk, North America, Trophies with tags on January 13, 2010 by thegreatwhitehunter

Has anyone heard verification of the harvest and size of this bull.  If this is accurate, it will pass the famous spyder bull harvested in Utah in 2008.  Here is the description forwarded to me by email: This Elk was killed with a bow in the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness (Montana ) . He green scored 575′ and should net out at about 530′ non typical. He has and unbelievable outside spread of 79′. This is the biggest bull elk ever taken with any weapon.

Got Hunts-Amazing Adventures

Thanks Cory for forwarding the following two photos and stories.  Cory runs a great booking service and has an amazing website.  Check out Got hunts for worldwide hunting, fishing and outdoor adventures http://www.gothunts.com/

“I hunted with them this past August during an early-season velvet hunt and took a buck that green scored close to 200 B&C, and I saw but could not get on a buck that would have scored another 15 to 20. That buck was higher, wider and had a 14-inch sword point on one side of his rack. I lost him after an all-morning stalk in the timber. Fifteen minutes later, I spotted the buck I eventually killed. I also saw a third buck that was larger still. In total, I saw 15 bucks in a day and a half.” Hunter Larry Barnes

This story of a rare spot and stalk mountain lion hunt is a great one as well.  Thanks Cory for forwarding!

On the third day of my November mule deer hunt, we were working our way to a glassing point when below us elk started to bark (alert) there was more barking below and to the right also. We sat down to see if we could glass up the elk & hopefully a bull (I had an Elk tag also). My guide cow called & they answered back. Glassing, he say’s “there’s a Mountain Lion” then he say’s “the lion just laid down, perfect!”. It took a while for him to show me where the big cat was. Once I had found him, we ranged it at 591 yards through a window in the pines, behind a downed log.

The guide asks, “Ya want a Lion?” “Heck yes but that’s a long ways!” “That’s ok, if you miss we’ll just keep elk hunting.” “Take your time & squeeze one off when ever your ready.

At the recoil I think to myself, that felt good, and the twackkkk…….. sounded good too! “You got him, holy $*#t! what a shot!” ect, ect, ect… It was pretty exciting. Through the glass my guide saw the lion slowly roll, tail up then the white belly, then rolls 2 more times down hill and out of sight.

In Idaho the lion season is open, you can use a mule deer tag as a lion tag. It’s a tom & measures 7′ with a 14″ skull, estimated weight of 150 lb. He was in great shape with a thick layer of fat.

I didn’t get a Muley buck but I did get a Muley eater. I hope everyone has had a great hunting season. Outdoors International did a great job setting me up with the trip of a lifetime.

Skoronski Bull-434 inches of Beautiful

Posted in Big Game, Elk, Guides and Outfitters, guides and outfitters, North America, Trophies, World's Best with tags on December 26, 2009 by thegreatwhitehunter

Utah has replaced Arizona as the big bull Mecca for world class rocky mountain elk.  In 2006 one particularly trememdous specimen was harvested by Ron Skoronski and his legendary guide Doyle Moss and his Mossback Team.  This bull is a typical 6×6 who scores a remarkable 434 inches Boone and Crocket.  Possibly the largest 6×6 ever harvested, this old boy is Mr. Skoronski’s second 400 class bull elk.  An amazing feat by itself.

Special thanks to Doyle Moss for use of the photo.  For more photos of this exceptional animal visit http://www.mossback.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=286  If a 400 class bull is your goal and you have the financial means to buy one of those coveted conservation tags at auction, Doyle and his team are your best bet for harvesting the trophy of a lifetime. The money goes to conservation of these beautiful animals.  In 2006 alone, Doyle and his crew harvested 8 bulls over 400 inches and several more just shy of that magical mark.  http://mossback.com/Home/
